“I just have too much counter space,” said no one ever.  Is cooking and entertaining in your small kitchen difficult due to a lack of counter space? There are lots of different options you can do to make it seem like you have more kitchen countertop space than you really do.

Make use of cutting boards

When you’re not using the sink, hob or appliance (washing mashing or tumble dryer), why not use the space as extra prep area by covering it with a cutting board? Brands such as Franke & Blanco offer a range of chopping boards in a variety of materials that have been designed to fit over the kitchen sink or draining board to create additional workspace in your kitchen. Alternatively, when choosing a cutting board that will fit over your existing sink or other appliances, the key is finding a board long enough to rest comfortably on these different surfaces.

Pull-out cutting board

A cutting board that pulls out from underneath your permanent countertops gives you more prep space that’s easy to hide when you’re done with it.

Creative appliance storage

The microwave, the mixer, the toaster and the blender: They’re only the beginning of things cluttering up our counters. Perhaps it’s time to find their proper hiding spots, especially if you don’t use them frequently. Make use of your cabinets underneath the sink, which is usually only used for the cleaning chemicals and does not need to take up the entire cupboard. Add a corner carousel in your corner unit and put the tupperware somewhere else and use that no-longer-awkward space to store the small appliances. You could also add an appliance garage into your kitchen. Although it still takes up counter space, at least it’s hiding the actual appliances.

Fold-down work surface

Be it countertop, bar-style eating, or cutting board; fold-down surfaces are great ways to add usable work space to the kitchen without taking up much room. Attach a fold-down surface to the wall or the side of your cupboards for extra prep space when you need it.  The best part is that since the bracket allows you to fold the counter away, you can put it in an area where people may need to walk at other times.

Use your windowsill for storage.

A windowsill or window frame is basically a built-in shelf that you don’t have to buy or build, so make the most of it. There’s no reason not to fill the entire sill, but make use of this space for an herb garden, kitchen canisters, cookbooks and all those other things that so often clutter your counters.

Movable Island

Having a movable island can serve multiple purposes in your kitchen. They can be moved easily around the kitchen to make preparation more convenient in the different preparation areas; could be a very nice side table or serving cart; it can also be used as a dining table whenever you have guests coming over.
