The ‘Dark Side’ of 2019 Kitchen Designs

Whether you’re planning to remodel your kitchen or get inspired for a simple refresh, here are our top kitchen design trends to consider for 2019. Some we will see within the coming months and some will be micro trends just peeking out that will take some people a good year or two to really grab hold of.

Black is arguably the “it” colour of the year

We’ve seen the dark matte texture start to appear as a kitchen trend in more recent years. There’s a move away from white to richer, bolder, intoxicating looks. This may come as a shock to the white kitchen-obsessed, but matte black is taking over. Not only as a cabinetry choice, but from appliances, soft furnishings, wall and tile finishes. Not entirely sure about using black as your main feature? Black feels fresh as a crisp accent colour in light-coloured kitchens, and black finishes are a way to add some drama without fully darkening your kitchen.

The White Kitchen is Out

Although white cabinets are a classic look that can be used in almost any kind of kitchen style, we are slowly starting to see them on the way out! We expect white to start declining in popularity throughout 2019. The white kitchen is a timeless, but many are getting quite bored of a kitchen devoid of colour. It feels lifeless in a space that is considered the heart of the home. Consider introducing some distinctive hues like dark blue, black, deep greens, and dark grey feature. Dark kitchen cabinets portray full-on elegance and a deep rich luxurious atmosphere that the other options just don’t. This dark matte finish naturally reduces the appearance of finger prints and dirt. They cast the kitchen in a subtle dramatic essence. However, you have to be careful that it does not overpower the room, making it feel perpetually dark.

Pops of colour

If you want to break away from the monotonous & monochrome schemes… opt for accent walls, accessories, backsplash motifs, the possibilities are endless! Most people are opting for a metallic accent colour. Golden or copper tones are a kitchen trend that seems to be quite stubborn as it is a style that keeps trying to make its way into our kitchens year after year. These colours work well in most kitchens, whether you have dark or light. Use them in small doses to create a bigger impact.

Goodbye Gloss and Shine

As with the pure white kitchens, glossy and shiny surfaces will be taking a step back. Matte appliances and cabinets blend well with most of the materials in a kitchen. The matt kitchen can be described as one of understated class and elegance and convey a feeling of pure luxury.

Contrasting Textures

In 2019, a combination of contrasting textures and sleek finishes will be most interesting. Get a little rustic and consider incorporating more stone and natural wood into your kitchen. Both can be used for countertops, wall cladding, backsplashes and flooring.

Metal Open-Shelving

Inspired by hotel and retail spaces, open shelving that adds a bold statement or feature to the kitchen, was popular in years past. However, from 2019 open wooden shelving is being replaced by black metal / iron shelves to give a kitchen attitude, style and flexibility. Edgy and elegant.

Concealed Storage & Appliances

Multifunctional and hidden storage will be an essential feature for all kitchen types in the coming years and the demand for personalised storage is expected to rise. We are not only moving towards incorporating integrated appliances in more kitchen designs, but even introducing moveable work-surfaces, pull down units for unreachable spaces, hidden wall panels and retractable doors. Sliding doors and hidden drawers are not just extremely versatile in enabling you to hide away a large variety of appliances, but also maximises every available space.

Home-grown Herbs

In addition to ensuring freshness, colour and scent for your kitchen, and indoor herb garden also provides the notion that you mean business when it comes to cooking and spicing your cuisines. The convenience of having fresh herbs handily accessible is an affordable luxury.
